South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir has performed us proud, with a third Grammy win for his or her album Freedom within the World Music Award Class — beating out nominees Seun Kuti from Nigeria, Bombino from Niger, Fatoumata Diawara from Mali, and Soviet’s Yiddish Glory. The SGC had been earlier Grammy winners in 2007 and 2008.
Choir Grasp and Founding Member Shimmy Jiyane, Musical Director Diniloxolo Ndlakuse (aka “Milton”), Common Supervisor Mulalo Mulovhedzi and administrator Mary Mulovhedzi represented the 46-member choir on the 61st annual GRAMMYs in Los Angeles.
Milton (Diniloxolo Ndlakuse), producer/musical director of Freedom, shared an unique message with Folks Journal for all their followers in SA and past. “With the nation commemorating Nelson Mandela’s centenary in varied methods, we the Soweto Gospel Choir, discovered it becoming to revive the reminiscences of our individuals, concerning the immense sacrifice and contribution they made in direction of liberation — by reviving a few of the extra common wrestle songs, lest we overlook. With this Grammy win, we wish to thank our buddies in SA and all over the world, for his or her persevering with help and prayer for us.
